history

EC Nordhorn

In 1976 , with the EC Nordhorn , a club from Nordhorn rose to higher-class ice hockey for the first time . Until 1983 , the club played in the then fourth-rate Regionalliga Nord and finally qualified for the 1983/84 season for the league , which he belonged to until the 1990/91 season . In 1995, however, the EC Nordhorn had to disband due to financial problems.

GEC Nordhorn

For the 1997/98 season , GEC Nordhorn , which was founded in 1995 as a successor, rose directly to the second-rate first division north by abolishing the third-highest division in the north . In the first year, the GEC was able to keep the class and thus became a founding member of the new 2nd Bundesliga , which in the premiere year 1998/99 was still run under the name Bundesliga . During the 1999/00 season , however, the GEC went bankrupt in November 1999 and stopped playing.

EC Euregio Nordhorn

As a successor, the club EC Euregio Nordhorn was founded in 1999 , which continued the game instead of the 1b team in the 2000/01 season in the Regionalliga Nord .

EC Euregio Gronau-Nordhorn

When the reunification of the regional leagues north and east into the regional league north / east and the introduction of the association league north / east as a league level below it was decided for the 2005/06 season , the ECE applied for the transfer to the club because of the fact that the club could not finance participation in both leagues State ice sports association North Rhine-Westphalia. However, this change was not approved by the Lower Saxony State Ice Sports Association . In order to still be able to join the North Rhine-Westphalian Association, the association members decided on May 20, 2005 to relocate the association's headquarters from Nordhorn in Lower Saxony to Gronau in the nearby North Rhine-Westphalia region and to rename the association to EC Euregio Gronau-Nordhorn . However, the games continued to take place in the ice rink in Nordhorn.

This move resulted in the classification of the first team in the State Ice Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia as a new club. Instead of the seventh division, which was actually intended for this, it was possible to start playing in the sixth division with a special permit.

In the 2006/2007 season, ECE won the title of state league champion NRW. The first team then played in the fifth-class association league of North Rhine-Westphalia and later in the NRW league.

Grafschafter EC 2011

In March 2011, in the tradition of the GEC Nordhorn, the Grafschafter ice hockey club "Ritter" 2011 e. V. The club took part in the Regionalliga Nord 2011/12 under the traditional name GEC Ritter . Since the city of Nordhorn could only sponsor sports locally if a club had both senior and junior teams, the ECE Gronau-Nordhorn joined the GEC 2011 on June 23, 2011 at extraordinary general meetings of the two clubs . Due to a formal error, the merger is not legally effective, so that the ECE initially continued to exist as an association.

On March 25, 2012 the GEC knights were able to win the premature championship in the Regionalliga Nord of the 2011/12 season with a 7-3 in the penultimate game of the season in Harsefeld. After winning the championship, the knights rose to the league . During the season of the Oberliga Nord 2014/15 , the club was placed under provisional insolvency administration on January 21, 2015 due to a third-party application. The season was played to the end. The insolvency proceedings were opened on April 7, 2015. On July 24, 2015, the insolvency proceedings were discontinued due to lack of assets.

EC Nordhorn

The ice hockey club Nordhorn started the 2015/16 season with three youth teams and one senior team. The first team won all 12 games in Group B of the Landesliga Nord and won the regional league championship with wins against the Adendorfer EC 1b (21: 0 and 11: 2). In the following season, the club was able to secure the championship title in the association league, so that it will start in the Regionalliga Nord from the 2017/18 season.

Venue

The Nordhorn teams play their home games in the Nordhorn ice rink (also called Arena Nordhorn ), which has a capacity of 3,500 spectators. In May 2015 it became known that the ice rink was no longer to go into operation for the 2015/16 season: the operating permit for the existing refrigeration system was refused during a regular inspection. After some renovation work, the operating license was extended until the end of 2017.

In the summer of 2017, the newly founded GEE (Grafschafter Eissport und Event GmbH) took over the operation of the ice rink for two years. Following this trial run, it should be decided whether GEE will continue to operate the hall. By replacing the refrigeration system, which uses brine instead of ammonia for cooling, the operating license for this period could also be granted.

In the late summer of 2018, the ice rink was initially closed due to a roof that was in danger of collapsing. A citizens' initiative fights for their preservation.
