Ari Eerik Haanpää (born November 29, 1965 in Nokia ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 2002 .
Career
Ari Haanpää began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of Tappara Tampere . From there, he moved in 1982 to the town neighbors Ilves Tampere | for the first team the winger from 1983 to 1985 in the SM-liiga , the highest Finnish league, was active and with whom he in the 1984/85 season champion was. During his time with Ilves Tampere he was also selected in the fourth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft as the 83rd player by the New York Islanders , for whom he was regularly used in the National Hockey League from 1985 to 1987 . Although he was also under contract with the Islanders in the 1987/88 season, he only played one game for the team from New York during this season, while spending the rest of the season with their farm team , the Springfield Indians , in the American Hockey League spent.
After he was no longer part of the permanent staff in the NHL, Haanpää returned to his Finnish homeland, where he hunted goals for Lukko Rauma from 1988 to 1990 and then for three years for JYP HT and his ex-club Tappara Tampere. With JYP he was runner- up in the 1991/92 season and failed with his team only in the playoff final at Jokerit Helsinki . From 1996 to 1999 the former junior national player was under contract with various clubs in other European countries and played for one year in succession for the Wiener EV in the Austrian ice hockey league , the GEC Nordhorn in the first division , the second highest German division at the time , as well as the Hockey Club de Reims in the French Ligue Magnus . After a two-year break, he played again in the 2001/02 season in three games for the Finnish fourth division club Kiekko-Ahma.
Since 2010 he has worked as a scout for the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League.

For Finland Haanpää took part in the Junior European Championships in 1982 and 1983, as well as the Junior World Championships in 1984 and 1985 .
