Jokerit (dt. The Joker , full club name Helsingin Jokerit ry ) is a Finnish ice hockey club from Helsinki . The club emerged in 1967 from the ice hockey department of the bankrupt sports club Töölön Vesa . Jokerit played from 1969 to 1987 and again since 1989 in the top Finnish league, today's Liiga , and won six Finnish championships during this time. From the 2014/15 season, Jokerit became the first Finnish ice hockey club to switch to the Continental Hockey League . The team plays their home games in the Hartwall Arena, which can hold over 13,000 spectators .
history
The ice hockey department of the amateur sports club Töölön Vesa was heavily indebted and was dissolved in 1967. Aimo Mäkinen took the opportunity and founded a semi-professional sports club on the basis of the existing structures, including the junior teams and the right to start in the second highest Finnish league, the Suomi-sarja .
Only a few players from the first team of Töölön Vesa were transferred to the new club. Among them were Timo Turunen , who is still the best points collector in the club's history. Then there were Pentti Hiiros and Timo Kyntölä , with whom he formed the so-called nallipyssyketju series until 1975 - this name comes from the rather small height of the players (Hiiros was the tallest of the three players at 172 cm).
On June 28, 2013 it was officially announced that both the hall ( Hartwall Areena ) and the club had been sold to the Russian-Finnish entrepreneur Gennadi Nikolajewitsch Timchenko and the Russian-Finnish Rotenberg family. As a result, he will move to the Continental Hockey League from the 2014/15 season .
