Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod ( Russian Торпедо Нижний Новгород ) is a Russian ice hockey club from Nizhny Novgorod , Russia . It was founded in 1947 as Torpedo Gorki and belonged to the top division of the Soviet Union for many years . The club's home games were played at the Konovalenko Sports Palace , named after one of Russia's most famous goalkeepers, Viktor Konovalenko . The KRK Nagorny has been the home ground of Torpedos since 2007 .
history
Since the founding of Torpedo Gorki, the club's first team played in the Soviet league and was able to reach the runner-up in 1961. In the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union, Gorky was renamed Nizhny Novgorod again. Logically, the ice hockey club changed its name to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod . The club held out in the international championship of the CIS countries until 1996 , before Torpedo became a so-called elevator team that was promoted or relegated after each season. Between 1999 and 2002 the club was able to establish itself again in the super league . In 2003 and 2007, the Torpedo team won the championship of the Vysschaya League . The club has been participating in the Continental Hockey League since 2008 .
