Viktor Sergejewitsch Konovalenko ( Russian Виктор Сергеевич Коноваленко ; born March 11, 1938 in Gorky , Russian SFSR , † February 20, 1996 in Nizhny Novgorod ) was a Russian - Soviet ice hockey goalkeeper .

Career

His career began in 1956 at his home club Torpedo Gorki (today Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod ), where he was on the ice in 450 games until 1972. During this time he was also a member of the Soviet national ice hockey team , with which he won eight gold medals and one bronze medal in nine ice hockey world championships . He also took part in two Olympic Games and won gold medals both times ( 1964 and 1968 ). At the end of his career he trained another - then still young - goalkeeper, Wladislaw Tretjak .

In his hometown the ice rink, the "Konovalenko Sports Palace", was named after him. In 2007 he was honored for his services with the induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame . In 1963 he was inducted into the Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Fame .
