Pavel Brendl (born March 23, 1981 in Nové Město nad Metují , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Lausitzer Füchsen in the DEL2 .
Career
Pavel Brendl learned to play ice hockey at HC Olomouc , for which he played in the Czech junior league until 1998. In the 1997/98 season he also played 12 games in the men's team from Olomouc, which then played in the second-class 1st division . After he had played at the U18 European Championship, Brendl moved to North America to the Calgary Hitmen from the Western Hockey League .
In his first year he dominated the WHL and led his team to the WHL championship and to the final of the Memorial Cup . The WHL and the CHL showered him with awards such as the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award , the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy and the election to various All-Star teams . The performances shown motivated the New York Rangers to select Brendl in the first round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft as fourth. In the following WHL season he scored 111 points and was the top scorer of his team. After the end of the season in the WHL, he was appointed to the Rangers farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack , in the American Hockey League , where he played two playoff games. In his third year in Calgary he completed only 49 games for the Hitmen (40 goals and 39 assists) during the regular season and excelled in the WHL playoffs with seven goals and six assists in ten games.
In August 2001 he was handed over to the Philadelphia Flyers together with Jan Hlaváč , Kim Johnsson and a draft right, who sent Eric Lindros to New York for it. With the Flyers Brendl also came to his first NHL appearances, but played most of the 2001/02 season with the Philadelphia Phantoms in the AHL. His first full NHL season he completed the following season , during which he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes . But even in Carolina he could not prevail and played 2003/04 mainly for the Lowell Lock Monsters in the AHL. During the lockout in the 2004-05 NHL season moved Brendl from a European club to the next: from HC Ocelari Trinec about the HC Olomouc at the Malmo Redhawks , later in the Mestis to Jokipojat Joensuu and finally he landed in HC Thurgau in National League B . After the lockout, he returned to Lowell and was sent to the Phoenix Coyotes in December 2005 , who gave Krystofer Kolanos to Carolina in return . After a disappointing 2005/06 season with only two NHL games for the Coyotes, he turned his back on North America and signed a contract with the Swedish first division club Mora IK . There he advanced to the top scorer of the 2006/07 season . He also successfully took part in the Spengler Cup and was elected to the All-Star Team there.
The performances shown earned him a three-year contract with league rivals Brynäs IF . However, he left this after only one year to play for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod from 2008 to 2010 in the newly founded Continental Hockey League . At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he was under contract with Kalpa Kuopio in the Finnish SM-liiga before he moved to Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in the KHL in November 2010 . At the end of the season, his contract was not extended. In November 2011 he was signed by the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers for the rest of the season . At the end of May 2012 it was announced that Brendl will return to HC Pardubice for the 2012/13 season. During the 2013/14 season he was loaned to HC Kometa Brno for a month , but has been under contract with the Lausitzer Füchsen in the DEL2 since December 2013 .
International
Pavel Brendl represented his home country Czech Republic in two junior title fights: In 1998 he took part in the U18 European Championship and in 2001 he became world champion with the U20 selection. At this tournament he was also elected to the All-Star Team and named the best striker. 2006 was first appointed to the squad of the Czech men's national team, with which he participated in the Karjala Cup in Finland.
