There he was one of the team's best scorers and scored 82 scorer points in 83 games. During the NHL Entry Draft 2000 it was those responsible for the Phoenix Coyotes who selected him in the first round in a total of 19th position. For the 2001/02 season , the offensive player decided to move to the National Hockey League for the Phoenix Coyotes, for which he completed 59 missions in his first season and was able to score 22 times. The following season , Kolanos suffered a shock and wore the Coyotes jersey only twice.
The 2004/05 NHL season , which was canceled due to the players' strike , he first spent in the Finnish SM-liiga with the Espoo Blues and then in the German ice hockey league with the Krefeld Penguins . In the summer of 2005 he returned to Phoenix . After a brief stint with the Edmonton Oilers , he signed a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes . He finally ended the current season with the Pittsburgh Penguins , who used him exclusively in their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League . His contract was not extended there. Kolanos then joined the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent , for which he was not used and instead went on the ice for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
At the end of the 2006/07 season he forced a move to Europe and from then on went on the ice for the SCL Tigers and EV Zug from the Swiss National League A. The right-handed shooter, who scored 17 points in 22 NLA games, recommended himself for a renewed engagement in North America and moved to the Calgary Flames in his native Calgary in the summer of 2007 . However, the management of the Flames handed it over to the farm team, the Quad City Flames from the AHL. After only one season he left the club and joined the Minnesota Wild , for which he was on the ice in 21 games. For most of the season he laced up the skates for the Houston Eros in the American Hockey League.
In July 2009, the Philadelphia Flyers signed him as a free agent, but Kolanos was never used for the Flyers in the NHL and instead played with their farm team, the Adirondack Phantoms , in the AHL. In the spring of 2010 Kolanos injured his hip and underwent an operation a short time later, so that he only came to 27 appearances in the AHL in the 2009/10 season. Before the start of the 2010/11 season, he took part in the training camp of the New York Islanders , but Kolanos got no contract in the organization of the Islanders. For the entire 2010/11 season he then suspended the game before aiming for his comeback in the fall of 2011 at the Abbotsford Heat training camp . In mid-November 2011, the Heat took him under contract after Kolanos had convinced with seven goals and six assists in seven AHL games.
On February 1, 2012, he was signed by the Calgary Flames , for which he was used in 13 games in the 2011/12 NHL season .
