The Lowell Devils were an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League . They played at Tsongas Arena (6,500 seats) in Lowell , Massachusetts between 1998 and 2010 . Their club colors were red, black and white. In June 2010 the team moved to Albany , New York and adopted the name Albany Devils .

history

The team was founded in 1998 under the name Lowell Lock Monsters as a farm team of the New York Islanders and the Los Angeles Kings , both of whom play in the National Hockey League . From the 2001/02 season they were the farm team of the Carolina Hurricanes , in 2004/05 Carolina shared the Lock Monsters with the Calgary Flames and in 2005/06 they shared it with the Colorado Avalanche . During their existence they have so far been able to finish a division as the best team twice (1999 and 2002), but they never came in the play-offs beyond the second round.

In 2006 the franchise was sold to the New Jersey Devils , who ran the team from then on. After four years, the New Jersey team management requested that the Lowell Devils move to Albany , New York and be renamed Albany Devils to move the team closer to New Jersey. The league granted the request, since with the Albany River Rats only at the end of the 2009/10 season a team had left the city.
