He was able to prove that he has a lot of talent in his first game, which he completed in the WHL in 2001, when he managed a shutout .
In the summer of 2004, Cam Ward moved to the American Hockey League , where he played for the Lowell Lock Monsters , the Carolina Hurricanes' farm team . He played an outstanding season, so he was inducted into the NHL squad of Carolina at the beginning of the 2005-06 season .
In the regular season he was the substitute behind the Swiss number 1 Martin Gerber and was able to play a total of 28 games. But then his big hour struck in the playoffs . He was able to oust Martin Gerber and his outstanding performance made him one of the most important pillars when his Carolina Hurricanes made it to the Stanley Cup finals. In the final series against the Edmonton Oilers he and his team took the lead with 3-1 and believed the championship was already secure, but the Oilers equalized to 3-3 and so it came to the playoff, which the Hurricanes also thanks to an excellent performance Won by Cam Ward 3-1. This was the first time that the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup. Cam Ward was also honored as the best player in the playoffs with the Conn Smythe Trophy .
In the 2006/07 season, Ward took over the post of goalkeeper and from the Tampa Bay Lightning undertook John Grahame acted as back-up -Goalie. Ward's previous partner Martin Gerber moved from Carolina to the Ottawa Senators . Ward presented himself in his first season as the first goalkeeper of the Hurricanes in good form and showed solid performances, but the majority of the team could not build on the previous season and the Hurricanes missed the qualification for the playoffs.
After the end of the season Ward joined the Canadian national team at the World Cup and won the gold medal.
In December 2017, Ward hit the milestone of 300 NHL wins . After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract with the Hurricanes was not renewed, so he left Carolina after 13 years and joined the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent in July 2018 . There he played a further 33 games over the course of the season and thus reached the mark of 700 completed games in the regular NHL season. Fewer than 30 goalkeepers had reached this milestone in NHL history at the time. In August 2019, Ward finally announced the end of his playing career.
