The 58th National Hockey League All-Star Game took place on January 30, 2011 at the RBC Center , the home ground of the Carolina Hurricanes , in Raleigh , North Carolina .

Choice of participants

The first six participating players for the All-Star Game were determined by means of a fan vote. Sidney Crosby won the most with 635,509 votes and was elected together with his teammate from the Pittsburgh Penguins , namely Jewgeni Malkin , Kristopher Letang and Marc-André Fleury . The duo of the Chicago Blackhawks , Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith , completed the six players who participated by fan vote.

The other 36 players for the All-Star Game were determined by the National Hockey League and announced on January 11, 2010 together with twelve rookies who took part in the Honda NHL SuperSkills on January 29, 2011.

The two teams in the All-Star Game each comprised three goalkeepers, six defenders and twelve forwards. The captains and assistant captains were determined at a player selection. Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidström were chosen as captains . In the NHL All-Star Game, the two teams competed under the name Team Lidström vs. Team Staal .

All-Star Game

The Lidström team decided this relatively even encounter with 11:10. In the initial phase, the team around captain Eric Staal made a “lightning start” with four goals within 5:41 minutes, but the Lidström team was able to equalize the score before the first period was over. In the second period it was Patrick Sharp who put the Staal team back into the lead and Kristopher Letang increased to 6: 4, before Anže Kopitar and Steven Stamkos equalized the game with two goals. At the end of the second period, the “home team” around Eric Staal, Jeff Skinner and Cam Ward were behind for the first time after a goal by Daniel Brière .

The Staal team also started with playful advantages in the final third and scored two goals before Daniel Brière equalized again after 49:57 minutes with the goal to make it 8: 8. The team led by Nicklas Lidström subsequently played their way up two goals. 1:11 minutes before the end of the game, Loui Eriksson hit the empty goal to make it 11: 9 for Team Lidström , which won the game. Patrick Sharp was named the game's Most Valuable Player .

SuperSkills Competition

The Honda NHL SuperSkills took place on January 29, 2011. Zdeno Chára of the Boston Bruins took the hardest shot at 105.9 miles per hour (170.43 kilometers per hour (km / h) ). Anaheim's Corey Perry won the shootout , defeating Tim Thomas on his last shot . Michael Grabner of the New York Islanders was the fastest runner, while Edmonton's Taylor Hall was second. The Breakaway Challenge was won by Russian Alexander Ovechkin , who had already won this competition in 2008 and 2009.
