Derek Stepan was already selected as a high school player in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as the 51st player of the New York Rangers . Only three other NHL players in their 93-year history and none of the New York Rangers players succeeded in this. For the 2011 NHL All-Star Game , he was nominated as one of twelve rookies who took part in the Honda NHL SuperSkills .
After seven years in the organization of the Rangers, Stepan and Antti Raanta were handed over to the Arizona Coyotes in June 2017 , who in return sent Anthony DeAngelo and a first-round right to vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to New York.
