Alex Goligoski (born July 30, 1985 in Grand Rapids , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since June 2016 . The defender was previously active in the NHL for the Dallas Stars and the Pittsburgh Penguins , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2009 playoffs .
Career
Alex Goligoski first played for the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks , a high school team from his hometown of Grand Rapids . In addition, he was active from the 2002/03 season for two teams in the United States Hockey League . Here his talent was so him the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft in 2004 selected in the second round at the 61st place. Then Goligoski went to the University of Minnesota , and also played for the local ice hockey team. In three seasons, the American was one of the best offensive defenders and was first elected to the all-rookie team and later also to the all-star team in his league. In 2007 he and his team won the Broadmoor Trophy , which the winner of the play-offs of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association receives.
The defender then signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins . This sent him to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League , where Goligoski began the 2007/08 season . In February 2008, the Penguins from the National Hockey League requested him , so the defender made his debut in the game against the Boston Bruins in the NHL. He played a total of three games in which he gave two assists. In the AHL he reached the final of the Calder Cup , but failed there because of the Chicago Wolves . The 2008/09 season began Goligoski in the NHL team, since regular players Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney had injured. He scored a goal in his first game of the season. In the further course the defender was active again in the AHL. In the NHL he got a total of 20 points scorer in 45 games. In the play-offs, the left shooter was scheduled for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, but after repeated injuries in the NHL team, he made his debut in the Stanley Cup play-offs. On June 12, 2009, the Penguins won the decisive seventh game against the Detroit Red Wings , bringing the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh for the third time . Shortly thereafter, Goligoski signed a new three-year contract that earned him $ 5.5 million.
On February 21, 2011, Goligoski was given to the Dallas Stars in a transfer deal in exchange for James Neal and Matt Niskanen . The defender was active for the stars for five years before his expiring contract was not extended after the 2015/16 season. The Arizona Coyotes secured the early negotiating rights to him , who gave the stars a five-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and subsequently provided Goligoski with a five-year contract.
