The NHL Entry Draft 2004 , the annual talent draw of the National Hockey League , took place on June 26, 2004 at the RBC Center in Raleigh , North Carolina , USA .
A total of 291 players were drawn in nine rounds. Due to the subsequent lockout of the 2004/05 season , the selected players did not have the chance to prove their skills in the following season. The top draft pick Alexander Ovetschkin was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the 2005/06 season . A year later, Yevgeny Malkin also repeated winning the trophy.
