Brian Ihnacak (born April 10, 1985 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player of Slovak descent who has been under contract with EHC Olten in the second-rate Swiss League since December 2017 . His father Peter Ihnačák and his uncle Miroslav Ihnačák were also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Brian Ihnacak, who was born as the son of the Slovak NHL player Peter Ihnačák in Toronto, Canada, where his father played for the Maple Leafs at the time, began his career as an ice hockey player with the St. Michael's Buzzers in the Canadian youth league OPJHL. In his first year there, he was elected to the league's first-all-star team. In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , he was drawn by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 9th round in a total of 259th position. However, he never played for the Penguins, but instead continued to play for Brown University's team , the Brown Bears , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association , for which he had played since 2003. In 2004 he was elected Rookie of the Year of the Ivy League and the NCAA as well as a member of the all-rookie team of the NCAA. In 2007 he moved to his parents' homeland for a year and played for the MHK SkiPark Kežmarok in the 2007/08 season in the Slovak extra league . After a year in the ECHL , in which he played for Augusta Lynx and the Elmira Jackals , he went back to Slovakia, where he was again in the 2009/10 season for the MHK SkiPark Kežmarok, which has now been relegated to the second Slovakian league, but was also active for the HKm Zvolen and the HK Poprad in the Extraliga. After that year he returned to North America and was on the ice for the Mississippi RiverKings , the Texas Brahmas and the Allen Americans in the Central Hockey League .

Ihnacak has been playing in Europe since 2011. He spent the first three years in Italy and not only played for SG Pontebba and HC Valpellice in the Italian first division , but also acquired Italian citizenship. He also won the Italian Cup with HC Valpellice and was named top scorer and top scorer in the league in 2014, although he moved to the Malmö Redhawks in HockeyAllsvenskan before the end of the season . The following season he moved to Vålerenga Ishockey in the Norwegian GET-ligaen and was also awarded there at the end of the season as top scorer and best goal setter and was elected to the league's all-star team. Nevertheless, he left the Norwegians after only a year and went to the Czech Republic , where he spent the next two and a half years with the extra league teams Mountfield HK , HC Sparta Prague and HC Litvínov . In December 2017 he moved to Switzerland for EHC Olten , where he ended the season in the second-rate Swiss League .

International

For Italy , Ihnacak took part in the World Cup in the top division in 2014 for the first time, but could not prevent relegation with the team, so that in 2015 he started with the Italians in Division I.
