The Central Hockey League ( CHL ) was a professional American Hockey - Minor-League , which existed from 1992 to 2014.

history

From 1963 to 1984 there was a Central Hockey League in the United States founded by Jack Adams . This is also known as the Central Professional Hockey League . In 1992 this idea was taken up by Bill Levins and Ray Miron , who had already been president of the old CHL in 1976, and the Central Hockey League was revived. Levins and Miron were the sole owners of the league.

The CHL started its first season in 1992/93 with six teams, these clubs were the Oklahoma City Blazers , the Tulsa Oilers , the Wichita Thunder , the Memphis RiverKings , the Dallas Freeze and the Fort Worth Fire .

After Levin's death, the trophy, which is presented to the winner of the CHL play-offs , was renamed the Levins Cup . Miron withdrew from the sport in 2000 and sold the CHL to the Global Entertainment Corporation. The championship trophy was renamed again and has been called the Ray Miron President's Cup ever since . In 2001 the CHL merged with the Western Professional Hockey League , the game operations continued to be held under the name Central Hockey League.

On June 1, 2010, the league together with the International Hockey League announced their cooperation from the 2010/11 season. The five IHL teams switched to the CHL this season, but the IHL remained officially as an organizing committee for the time being. Initially, the Fort Wayne Komets , Bloomington PrairieThunder , Dayton Gems and Quad City Mallards were added to the CHL. After Evansville IceMen from the All American Hockey League was accepted into the IHL in the summer of 2010, they were also allowed to join the CHL, which means that the number of participants in the 2010/11 season consisted of a total of 18 teams. At the end of the season, the Odessa Jackalopes initially retired from the CHL's game operations and moved to the North American Hockey League with a new team . The Colorado Eagles' application for membership in the ECHL was approved. The champions of the 2010/11 season Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs stopped playing just a few days after winning the title in June 2011 with immediate effect; the Mississippi RiverKings were inducted into the Southern Professional Hockey League .

For the 2013/14 season the expansion to include the newly founded Brampton Beast . The Laredo Bucks , which had previously been inactive for a season , were sold and relocated to Saint Charles , Missouri , where they took part in the league's gaming operations under the name of St. Charles Chill . The Fort Worth Brahmas were reported as inactive for the 2013-14 season, while the Bloomington Blaze moved to the Southern Professional Hockey League.

In the summer of 2014, the Arizona Sundogs , the Denver Cutthroats and the St. Charles Chill stopped playing, leaving only seven players in the league. On October 7, 2014, the seven remaining CHL participants were accepted into the ECHL and the CHL thus effectively dissolved.
