The Southern Hockey League was founded in 1973 as a professional minor league . In addition to the North American Hockey League , she took on the teams of the Eastern Hockey League, which was dissolved in the same year . Game operations started with six franchises and ended early in the middle of the 1976/77 season on January 31, 1977 with seven teams.
