Macon is a city in the US state of Georgia and the seat of Bibb County with approximately 152,555 residents. The city was founded in 1823 and named after Nathaniel Macon , who was a member of the US Congress from 1791 to 1828 . Native American Indians built earthworks near the city, which are now in the Ocmulgee National Monument . Production includes the textile industry, porcelain processing and equipment for aviation . In the south of the city there is an air force base (" Warner Robins "). In the American Civil War , Macon was a refuge for refugees during General William Tecumseh Sherman's Georgia campaign .
In 2014 the city of Macon merged with Bibb County and formed a consolidated city-county , which has been jointly administered since then. The city is the center of the Macon metropolitan area .
