Samuel Augustus "Sam" Nunn, Jr. (* 8. September 1938 in Macon , Georgia ) is an American businessman and politician of the Democrats . He represented the state of Georgia in the United States Senate from 1972 to 1997 .

Life and work

Nunn attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta from 1956 to 1959 and graduated from Emory University in 1961 . After joining the Georgia Bar in 1962, he began practicing law in Perry .

He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Strategic and International Studies .

With his wife, Colleen Ann O'Brien, Nunn has two children, Michelle and Brian.

politics

Nunn was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1968 to 1972 . He was elected to the US Senate on November 7, 1972, taking the seat of the late Senator Richard B. Russell . After several re-elections, he did not run for office in 1996 and left the Senate on January 3, 1997.

Because of his cross-party valued expertise in foreign policy, he was discussed several times (most recently in 2008) as a Democratic candidate for the US Vice Presidency. With the Republican Senator Richard Lugar , Nunn launched an initiative to reduce weapons of mass destruction , the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program , from 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union .

Awards

In 1997, Nunn was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He received the Chairman's Medal of the Heinz Awards in 2004 . In 2005 the American Philosophical Society awarded him their Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Public Service . The then Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle awarded him the Great Cross of Merit with a Star on February 1, 2013 for his commitment to disarmament .
