David Alfred Perdue, Jr. (* 10. December 1949 in Macon , Georgia ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . The former manager has represented the state of Georgia in the United States Senate since 2015 .

Family, education and work

Perdue is the son of two teachers and grew up in Warner Robins . He studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in 1972 and a master's degree in operations research in 1975 . In the following years he worked in various positions as a private businessman. Eventually he became a management consultant and set up Sara Lee's first headquarters in Asia. Later he was Chief Executive Officer of Dollar General and Reebok (until 2002). He then worked in leading positions for other companies. He gained the reputation of reversing the trend in companies in need of restructuring, but was reproached in the 2014 election campaign for giving preference to shareholders at the expense of employees.

Perdue has two children with his wife Bonnie, whom he married shortly after graduating from college. The Methodist lives in Glynn County . His cousin Sonny Perdue is a former governor of Georgia and US Secretary of Agriculture in the Trump cabinet since 2017 .

Political career

After one of Georgia's two Senators in the US Senate, Saxby Chambliss , declared in 2013 that he would not run again in the 2014 Senate election, Perdue - so far without any political experience - took up his position. In the 2014 election , Perdue was elected to the US Senate by triumphing over Democratic competitor Michelle Nunn with 52.89 percent of the vote . During the election campaign, he stylized himself as an outsider in the political arena who moved outside the hierarchy of his party in the Senate. He took up his six-year mandate on January 3, 2015 as a Class 2 Senator . He has already stated that if he is re-elected in 2020 he will not remain in the Senate for more than two terms, i.e. a total of twelve years.

Perdue is a member of the Agriculture, Budget, Foreign and Legal Committees, among others.

Positions and controversies

Perdue is committed to reducing the US national debt and tax cuts. He advocates abolishing the Obamacare health care reform . Speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition in June 2016 , Perdue jokingly urged the audience to pray for President Obama for his imminent death ( Psalm 109.8  EU ).
