Sonny Perdue
George Ervin "Sonny" Perdue III (born December 20, 1946 in Perry , Georgia ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Republican Party and served as the 81st governor of the state of Georgia from 2003 to 2011 . He has been the United States Secretary of Agriculture since April 25, 2017 .
Life
Perdue was born in Perry and grew up in Houston County . His father was a farmer, his mother a teacher. In his childhood he was not called by his real first name George, but Sonny. Purdue served in the US Air Force and achieved the rank of captain . At the University of Georgia , he earned the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, the professional doctorate in veterinary medicine common in the United States . He then worked in North Carolina as a veterinarian in a private practice.
He was elected to the Georgia Senate for Democrats in 1991 . In 1997 he joined the Republicans.
In November 2002 he won the gubernatorial election against incumbent Roy Barnes ; he was the first Republican governor in Georgia since 1872. Four years later he was re-elected with 60% of the vote; his opponent was the Democratic candidate Mark Taylor . Since the state constitution forbade him to run again, he left office in January 2011; Nathan Deal was his successor .
On January 18, 2017, Donald Trump nominated Perdue as United States Secretary of Agriculture . On April 24, 2017, the Senate confirmed him in this office with 87 to 11 votes; the following day he was sworn in by Federal Judge Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court .
At Trump's State of the Union Address 2018, Perdue acted as a so-called designated survivor .

Sonny Perdue is married, has four children and a grandfather of four.
His cousin, businessman David Perdue , has been the US Republican Senator for Georgia since 2015.
