The Houston County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Perry , which was named after Oliver Hazard Perry .

The county is located slightly east of the geographic center of Georgia and covers an area of 984 square kilometers, eight square kilometers of which is water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Twiggs County , Bleckley County , Pulaski County , Dooly County , Macon County , Peach County, and Bibb County .
The county is part of the Warner Robins metropolitan area .
history
Houston County was formed on May 15, 1821 as the 51st county of Georgia from land of the Creek Indians. It was named after John Houstoun , a Georgia governor from 1778 to 1784.

According to the 2010 census, the then 139,900 inhabitants were distributed among 53,051 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.61 people per household. There are a total of 58,325 households.
71.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.09 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 38.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 19.9% of all households.
29.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 15.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 48.7% of the population were male and 51.3% were female.
63.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 28.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.4% as Asian Americans . 2.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.8% to several ethnic groups. 6.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 53,270 USD , while 17.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.
