The Morgan County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Madison .

The county is located in north-central Georgia and has an area of 918 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Oconee County , Greene County , Putnam County , Jasper County , Newton County, and Walton County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .
history
Morgan County was formed on December 10, 1807 as the 32nd county in Georgia from parts of Baldwin County. It was named after General Daniel Morgan , who defeated the British at Cowpens in the Revolutionary War .
In 1849 the Madison Collegiate Institute was founded, later renamed Georgia Female College , and a short time later the Methodist Female College was founded. These two colleges were the first two for women in America. Both institutes were destroyed by fire years later.

According to the 2010 census, the then 17,868 inhabitants were distributed over 6,660 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.66 people per household. There are a total of 7,472 households.
76.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.06 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 35.4% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 29.6% of all households.
27.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.
72.7% of the population identified themselves as whites, 23.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 1.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.3% to several ethnic groups. 2.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 54,506 USD , while 13.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.
