The county is located in southern Georgia and has an area of ​​1,186 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Coffee County , Atkinson County , Lanier County , Lowndes County , Cook County , Tift County, and Irwin Counties .

John Macpherson Berrien

The Berrien County was formed on February 25, 1856 from parts of Coffee, Irwin and Lowndes Counties and named after John MacPherson Berrien , a US Senator who was attorney general under President Andrew Jackson . The county had one of the first postal routes in the United States, Coffee Road. It was opened in 1823 and extended to Florida .
