The Henry County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is McDonough , named after Captain Thomas Macdonough , the victor over the British at Lake Champlain in the British-American War of 1812.

The county is located in central northwest Georgia and has an area of 840 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rockdale County , Newton County , Butts County , Spalding County , Clayton County and DeKalb County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .

history

Henry County was formed from Land of the Creek Indians on May 15, 1821 as the 50th county of Georgia. It was named after Patrick Henry .

According to the 2010 census, the 203,922 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 70,255 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.89 people per household. There are a total of 76,533 households.

77.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.29 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 45.6% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 18.0% of all households.

32.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 12.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 48.0% of the population were male and 52.0% were female.

55.0% of the population identified themselves as white, 36.9% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 2.9% as Asian Americans . 2.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.4% to several ethnic groups. 5.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 60,424 USD , while 12.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
