The Gilmer County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Ellijay , named after a neighboring Indian settlement or the Indian expression for "Green Earth".

The county is located in northern Georgia and is about 22 miles from the southern Tennessee border. It covers an area of 1,118 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fannin County , Dawson County , Pickens County, and Murray County .

Gilmer County was formed on December 3, 1832 as the 84th County of Georgia from parts of Cherokee County. It was named after George Rockingham Gilmer , a US Congressman and governor of Georgia.

According to the 2010 census, the 28,292 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 11,314 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.58 people per household. There are a total of 16,564 households.
