The Washington County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Sandersville .

The county is located in north-central Georgia, about 90 km from the South Carolina border and has an area of 1,773 square kilometers, ten square kilometers of which are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Glascock County , Jefferson County , Johnson County , Wilkinson County , Baldwin County, and Hancock County .

Washington County was formed as the 10th County of Georgia and the Original County on February 25, 1784. It was named after President George Washington . The first settlers were Revolutionary War veterans who were paid with a piece of land for their services.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 21,187 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 7,547 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.56 people per household. There are a total of 9,047 households.
69.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.10 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 35.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 27.9% of all households.
26.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.2% were 60 years or older. The mean age was 39 years. 51.0% of the population were male and 49.0% were female.
45.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 52.7% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 0.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.0% to several ethnic groups. 1.9% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 37,417 USD , while 26.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
