The Irwin County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Ocilla , named after an Indian settlement.

The county is located in central south Georgia, about 50 miles from the northern Florida border and has an area of 939 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Ben Hill County , Coffee County , Berrien County , Tift County and Turner County .
history
Irwin County was formed from Land of the Creek Indians on December 15, 1818, the 45th county in Georgia. It was named after Jared Irwin a governor of Georgia.

According to the 2010 census, the then 9,538 inhabitants were distributed over 3,495 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.54 people per household. There are a total of 4033 households.

71.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 25.9% as African American and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.9% to several ethnic groups. 2.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
