The Macon County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Oglethorpe , named after General James Oglethorpe , the founder of Georgia.

The county is located a few miles southeast of the geographic center of Georgia and covers an area of 1,051 square kilometers, seven square kilometers of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Peach County , Houston County , Dooly County , Sumter County , Schley County, and Taylor County .
history
Macon County was formed on December 14, 1837 from parts of Houston County and Marion County. It was named after Nathaniel Macon , a General from South Carolina , statesman and President of the Senate .
During the American Civil War , about 45,000 Union soldiers were captive in southwest Macon County, of whom about 13,000 died of starvation, disease, or injuries. Most of them are buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery. In 1973 the former prisoner of war camp was restored as the Andersonville National Historic Site .

According to the 2010 census, the 14,740 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 4,999 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.56 people per household. There are a total of 6,136 households.
67.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.15 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 33.0% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 27.8% of all households.
25.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 54.1% of the population were male and 45.9% were female.
35.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 60.6% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.0% to several ethnic groups. 3.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 28,285 USD , while 32.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
