The Gwinnett County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Lawrenceville , named after the US naval officer James Lawrence .

geography

The county is located in north-central Georgia, about 130 km to the west from Alabama , about 100 km to the north from Tennessee and North Carolina, and to the northeast about 110 km from South Carolina . It has an area of ​​1131 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water surface. Gwinnett County is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hall County , Barrow County , Walton County , Rockdale County , DeKalb County , Fulton County, and Forsyth Counties . The northwest boundary is formed by the Chattahoochee River .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Gwinnett County was formed from Land of the Creek and Cherokee as the 42nd County of Georgia on December 15, 1818 . It was named after Button Gwinnett , one of the three signatories of Georgia's Declaration of Independence.
