Duluth [ dəˈluːθ ] is a city in Gwinnett County in the US state of Georgia with 26,600 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city is directly adjacent to the cities of Berkeley Lake (southwest) and Johns Creek (northwest, Fulton County ). It is located about 10 km west of Lawrenceville and about 30 km northeast of Atlanta on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River .

history

The city has only had its name since 1871. At that time, the city, originally called Howell Crossing , was renamed after the city of Duluth in Minnesota . This name goes back to Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut (1636-1710), a French captain. He was probably one of the first European explorers of this area in Minnesota.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 26,600 inhabitants were distributed over 10,555 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.52 people per household. There are a total of 11,313 households.

65.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.10 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.3% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 14.3% of all households.

26.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 31.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 47.8% of the population were male and 52.2% were female.

48.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 20.2% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 22.3% as Asian Americans . 5.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.1% to several ethnic groups. 14.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 61,472 USD , while 12.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 1999 President Warren G. Harding's personal Pullman " The Superb " was entered on the National Register of Historic Places .

The Southeastern Railway Museum was opened in 1970 by the National Railway Historical Society .

Duluth is the headquarters of the agricultural machinery manufacturer AGCO and the contact lens manufacturer Ciba Vision . In addition, the IT company Barco has its US location in Duluth. The Infinite Energy Arena is a multifunctional arena that is part of the Infinite Energy Center, which also includes a culture and a congress center.

Duluth is crossed by US Highway 23 and Georgia State Route 120 . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 50 km southwest).

The crime rate in 2010 was 171 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There was one murder, three rapes, 15 robberies, 23 assaults, 140 break-ins, 469 thefts and 34 car thefts.
