history
Lawrenceville was named a city by the general assembly of the state on December 15, 1821. The city was named after James Lawrence , naval officer and commander of the Chesapeake frigate in the War of 1812 . The name of the town was proposed by the first head of the post office, William Maltbie, in honor of the work of Lawrence.
Publisher Larry Flynt and his attorney Gene Reeves Jr. were allegedly shot by Joseph Paul Franklin on March 6, 1978 in Lawrenceville after a court hearing. Both survived the attack, but Flint was paralyzed from the waist down.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 28,546 inhabitants were distributed over 9,973 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.84 people per household. There are a total of 11,187 households.
69.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.39 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 42.8% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 19.5% of all households.
32.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 32 years. 47.8% of the population were male and 52.2% were female.
48.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 32.0% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 5.7% as Asian Americans . 10.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.4% to several ethnic groups. 22.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 41,578 USD , while 22.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
