The Chattahoochee River is a river that rises in the northeast of the US state of Georgia and flows through the western suburbs of Atlanta . Together with the Flint River , it forms the Apalachicola River in Florida. The name Chattahoochee comes from the Cherokee language and means "painted rock". In 1978 a nationally significant recreation area, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area was established.

The Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is a 45.26 km² nature reserve established in 1964 for water birds, among other places. It includes Lake Eufaula , where the Chattahoochee River is dammed, and lies on the state line between Alabama and Georgia .
