location
On the west bank is the town of Eufaula , on the east bank is Georgetown . The reservoir is primarily fed by the Chattahoochee River . Other small rivers and streams flow into the lake. At the southern tip near Fort Gaines is the Walter F. George Lock and Dam dam, which dams the Chattahoochee River, on the northern part extends the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge , a nature reserve in which year-round bird watching, fishing activities and boat tours are possible.
history
In 1963 the United States Army Corps of Engineers built the dam called Walter F. George Lock and Dam , which dammed the Chattahoochee River, creating a reservoir with a surface area of around 180 km². This reservoir fulfills several tasks:
- River water level control and flood protection
- Electric power generation using hydropower
- Creation of a navigable fairway
- Establishment of local recreation areas with tourist facilities
Before the flooding, numerous trees were cut down in the area of the newly created reservoir.
