AFC Champions League 2016

The AFC Champions League 2017 was the 15th season of the most important Asian competition for club teams in football under this name and the 36th overall. 47 clubs from 19 national associations took part in the competition this season. The season began with the first qualifying round on January 24th and ended with the second leg of the final on November 25th, 2017.

The Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds won the competition for the second time after 2007 with a 1-1 draw in the first leg and a 1-0 win in the second leg against al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia and qualified as a representative of the AFC for the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Defending champion Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors from South Korea was banned from participating due to corruption allegations .

The top scorer was the Syrian Omar Khribin from al-Hilal with 10 goals. The Japanese Yosuke Kashiwagi was named the best player in the competition .

qualification

The pairings in the three qualifying rounds were set according to the AFC four-year ranking in 2016, with matches between teams from the same national association being excluded. The team placed higher in the rating had home rights. The defeated teams from the associations, which only send one team to the Champions League, continued to play in the group stage of the AFC Cup . These include the clubs from Bahrain, India, Jordan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

In the event of a tie, extra time was played first and then a penalty shoot-out was applied if necessary .

First qualifying round

The game took place on January 24, 2017. In the absence of participants, the round in the western region was omitted.

Group stage

32 clubs from 11 national associations took part in the group stage. 24 teams qualified directly, plus 8 (four each from the western and eastern regions) from the play-off round. The group draw took place on December 13, 2016 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur . The teams were drawn into eight groups with four participants each. The teams from the western region formed groups A to D, those from the eastern region formed groups E to H. Teams from the same national association could not be drawn into the same group.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1 to 4, there are still several teams in the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams in question. Should this also not lead to a definitive placement, criteria 6 to 10 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. Number of goals in all group matches
  8. If it is only about two teams and these two are on the field, there will be a penalty shoot-out between them .
  9. Lower number of points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 point, yellow-red and red card 3 points, yellow card followed by a direct red card 4 points)
  10. Higher rank of the football association in the AFC four-year ranking

Final round

The division into the western and eastern regions, which already existed from the qualifying rounds, was continued in the final round up to the final.

Round of 16

The pairings for the round of 16 were blindly determined when the group stage was drawn in December 2016. So it could happen that teams from the same national association had to play against each other. A group runner-up each met a group winner from another group, with the group winners initially playing the first leg away. The first legs took place from May 22 to 24, 2017, and the second legs from May 29 to 31, 2017.
