Wataru Endō ( Japanese 遠藤 航 , Endō Wataru ; born February 9, 1993 in Yokohama ) is a Japanese football player . The defensive player is under contract in Germany with VfB Stuttgart and is a Japanese national player.

career

In the club

Endo began playing soccer in 1st grade in 1999 for the team at his elementary school Minamitotsuka in Yokohama or the opposite elementary school Shimogō and then the middle school Minamitotsuka. From 2008 was a member of the youth team of the first division club Shonan Bellmare , where he was a member of the U-17 national team . After graduating from Kanai high school, he was also taken over by the first division team in 2010.

In January 2016, Endo moved to the Urawa Red Diamonds . In two and a half seasons he made 75 appearances in the J1 League , in which he scored 5 goals. In addition, the defender won the Japanese League Cup as well as the AFC Champions League and Copa Suruga Bank with the club .

At the end of July 2018, Endo moved to the Belgian first division club VV St. Truiden . There he made 17 appearances in the 2018/19 season (12 times in the starting line-up) in the regular season, in which he scored 2 goals. He then made 9 appearances (all in the starting line-up) in the play-offs for the Europa League .

After Endō had made three league appearances at the beginning of the 2019/20 season in Division 1A , he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart on August 13, 2019 until the end of the 2019/20 second division season on loan . After Endo was substituted under head coach Tim Walter only once shortly before the end of the game until the 13th matchday, he ousted Atakan Karazor in the defensive midfield from the 14th matchday onwards and developed into a regular player. At the beginning of April 2020, VfB withdrew the purchase option contained in the loan agreement within the mandatory break ordered by the global COVID-19 pandemic .

In the national team

Endo was also chosen for Japan's soccer team (U21 / AFC U22) of the 2014 Asian Games , but had to cancel due to injury. In 2015, Endo made his debut for the Japanese national soccer team . With her, he qualified for the 2015 East Asian Cup , from which Japan was eliminated in the group stage. At the 2018 World Cup , the defensive player was in the squad without any action , in 2019 he made four appearances at the Asian Cup and lost with the team in the final against Qatar .
