From there it went to VfL Osnabrück via Arminia Bielefeld in summer 2011 . There he played two seasons in the U-17 Bundesliga , which Osnabrück finished as ninth in the table, and scored six goals in 37 games. He was then signed by Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and was a regular player in the U-19 Bundesliga there in his first season . He came to 14 goals in 23 appearances in the U-19 Bundesliga and in the UEFA Youth League and was captain of the team in parts in the following season . He also made his debut in the 3rd division for BVB's second team on August 2, 2014 , when he was substituted on for Edisson Jordanov in the 90th minute of the game against Holstein Kiel .

In preparation for the 2015/16 Bundesliga season , Stenzel was promoted to the first team's squad by coach Thomas Tuchel . During the preparation, Stenzel, who had always played on the double six before, was retrained as a right-back by coach Tuchel . Most of the first half of the season Stenzel was used in the second team in Regionalliga West , otherwise he was part of the professional squad for the Bundesliga games. On October 19, 2015, he prematurely extended his contract with Borussia until the end of June 2019. Stenzel finally played his first competitive game in the first team on December 10, 2015, when he lost BVB 1-0 on the last game day of Europe -League group stage against PAOK Thessaloniki was used for the entire season.

In January 2016 he was loaned to the second division club SC Freiburg until the end of June 2017 without a purchase option . There he made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 21, 2016 in the game against SV Sandhausen and made eleven starting eleven appearances in the second half of the 2015/16 season , which meant that he had his share in the direct return of the Breisgauers .

During the summer break, SC Freiburg signed the more experienced Aleksandar Ignjovski from Eintracht Frankfurt , against whom Stenzel was able to maintain his regular place. He debuted on September 10, 2016 game against Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga and missed in the first round of the season 2016/17 just a game. In the last game of the first half of the season against Bayern Munich , however, he suffered a shoulder injury, which is why he then had to undergo an operation. His first Bundesliga goal was the 2-1 winner on April 23, 2017 (matchday 30) in the home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . A few days later, Stenzel was permanently signed by SC Freiburg.

For the second division season 2019/20 the relegated VfB Stuttgart signed the defender on loan from Freiburg. Under head coach Tim Walter and his successor Pellegrino Matarazzo , he was part of the permanent staff and played all 34 league games (31 times from the start). After the promotion, VfB Stuttgart acquired the transfer rights to Stenzel for the 2020/21 season , who signed a new contract with a term until June 30, 2024.
