Geographical location and sights

Physical map of the Rödinghauser area

Bruchmühlen in North Rhine-Westphalia is located in the Ravensberg hill country north of the Else River and east of the Kilverbach . The main town on the Else is at an altitude of 70  m above sea level. NN . In the north, the area rises on the Rödinghauser side to the Wiehengebirge up to a height of around 120  m above sea level. NN at. The West Kilver farmers, after whom the old community was named until 1968, is significantly less populous than the main town of Bruchmühlen in the Elsen lowlands. The place is a little north of the main town of Bruchmühlen. The largest tributary of the Else to the Rödinghausen-Bruchmühlen area is the protected Kilverbach, which forms the border between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia in the west. To the west of the Kilverbach and north of the Else, the district of Düingdorf (until 1972 the community of Düingdorf) in the Lower Saxony district of Melle -Bruchmühlen borders Rödinghausen-Bruchmühlen. To the south of the Else, Rödinghausen-Bruchmühlen is bordered by the old community of Bennien, which is now part of the Bruchmühlen district of Melle.

history

The damp lowland around Bruchmühlen was settled in the 14th century. The Brocmole estate in what is now Lower Saxony, mentioned in 1322, gave Bruchmühlen its name. Only remains of this former moated castle have been preserved. In the 19th century there was a lot of smuggling via Kilverbach and Else because the place was still on the state border between the Kingdom of Hanover and Prussia .

Until the municipal territorial reform in North Rhine-Westphalia on January 1, 1969, West Kilver was an independent municipality and belonged to the Rödinghausen office. It was named after the manor house Kilver (first mentioned in 851). As a district of Rödinghausen, the area of the former municipality of West Kilver was given the name Bruchmühlen in October 1969 , as the place Bruchmühlen was already much larger than the farmers of West Kilver. The old parish name today only refers to the small peasantry West Kilver north of the main town Bruchmühlen around the Evangelical Lutheran Michael Church of the parish West Kilver. The first reference to the place West Kilver goes back to the year 1308, in which the western part of Kilver was explicitly mentioned in a lifting roll of the Herford monastery . Today the term Bruchmühlen is often used on the Rödinghauser side as a synonym for the Rödinghauser districts Ostkilver and Bruchmühlen (including the farmers Westkilver), because the exact course of the district boundary is not always known and the places are increasingly merging.

In 1972 the city of Melle decided to merge its newly incorporated districts of Düingdorf and Bennien in a district called Bruchmühlen , so that two places with this name have been adjacent since 1972.

Population development

The North Rhine-Westphalian part of Bruchmühlen has around 3400 inhabitants, making it the most populous district of Rödinghausen. The following overview shows the population of West Kilver according to the respective territorial status up to the incorporation into the municipality of Rödinghausen on January 1, 1969. The numbers are census results . From 1871 and 1946, the figures relate to the local population and from 1925 to the resident population . Before 1871, the population figures were determined using inconsistent survey methods.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the old community West Kilver

Blazon: In silver (white) two red ploughshares facing each other over a red rafter; underneath a red mill wheel.

The coat of arms of the old community is today without any municipal legal significance. The mill wheel refers to the mills at Else and Kilverbach, of which the Kolkmühle is still preserved today, and reflects the current name, which refers to (water) mills in Bruch at Else and Kilverbach. The rafter is typical of the region's coat of arms. It stands for the former affiliation to the County of Ravensberg . But also those of Ledebur , owner of the Bruchmühlen estate, had a single rafter in their coat of arms. The plowshares point to the long-standing owners of Haus Kilver and Gut Böckel , in whose vicinity West Kilver developed. The red ploughshare is featured in the family coat of arms by both the Westphalian noble families von Vinckes and von Bussche .
