List of local rail transport lines in North Rhine-Westphalia
The list of SPNV lines in North Rhine-Westphalia shows the structure of the entire local rail passenger transport (SPNV) on railway lines (according to EBO ) in North Rhine-Westphalia . With around 100 million train kilometers, the regional rail transport in North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the densest train services in Germany and basically runs according to an integral interval timetable (ITF) , the NRW interval that has existed since 1998 . This was developed by the company SMA und Partner from Zurich on behalf of the state government and in coordination with the regional special-purpose associations , which, according to the regionalization law of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (ÖPNVG NW), order the transport services from the railway companies . The ITF NRW competence center (short: KC ITF NRW), which is part of the local transport association Westphalia-Lippe , takes care of the further development of the timetable structure . This institution publishes a corresponding line clock chart every year.
Cycle schedule
The examples of the NRW integral cycle timetable shown here are only intended to illustrate the system. They do not include local rail transport on tram and light rail routes . Pure tram routes (in the sense of BOStrab ) are therefore not included in this list. Current information can be obtained from the transport associations shown.
The timetable is largely zero-symmetrical . Specifically, this means that the trains meet on the lines every hour at minutes: 59 and: 29, on the lines every two hours only at minute: 59. The departure times in the opposite direction can be calculated by mirroring the arrival times by the minute: 58.5.
On individual lines, the time of symmetry is shifted a few minutes backwards or forwards (e.g. Münster – Enschede: 55, Münster – Warendorf: 03).
All lines establish connections at node stations with each other and at connection points with local public transport .
Some lines are connected with each other, for example the regional train RB 67 with the RB 71 or the RB 73 with the regional express RE 82 ("Lipper Duo").
Operating companies
As of June 14, 2020
Of the 31 Regional Express lines, 9 (29.1%) are operated by DB Regio , 21 (67.7%) by private railways and one (3.2%) by SNCB .
Of the 55 regional train lines, 18 (32.7%) are operated by DB Regio or DB RegioNetz Verkehrs GmbH and 37 (67.3%) by private railways.
Of the 18 S-Bahn lines, 13 (72.2%) are operated by DB Regio and 5 (27.8%) by private railways.
In addition, four Stadtbahn Rhein-Sieg Stadtbahn lines run partly on railway lines, one of which is operated by the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) and one by Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB), the other two are operated jointly by the KVB and the SWB .
Local and regional transport
Lines in which the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has identified a particular state interest in accordance with Section 7 (4) of the Act on Local Public Transport in North Rhine-Westphalia (ÖPNVG NRW) and which must therefore be ordered are shown in yellow in the tables in the second column deposited.
The specified subnetworks represent the units according to which the lines were assigned.

particularities
line | description |
---|---|
RE 1 | The stations Nordbögge and Scharnhorst are served every hour. A transfer-free connection between these two stations is only possible with the RE 3. |
RE 2 | In order to be able to connect to the RE 60 in Osnabrück, the Kattenvenne and Natrup-Hagen stations are only served every two hours. |
RE 5 | Due to train overhauls with the ICE, the line sometimes does not stop in Oberhausen-Holten and Friedrichsfeld . Hourly service to all stations between Oberhausen and Wesel is only possible with the RE 19 and RE 49. |
RE 15 | The Emden Außenhafen stop is only served three to five times a day, depending on the season. The times are always adapted to the ferry from / to Borkum . |
RE 16 RB 33 RE 57 RB 91 | In these four cases, the two wing branches each have the same number. (In contrast to this, for historical reasons, a distinction is made between the Münster – Hamm and Paderborn – Ottbergen double units between RB 69 and RB 89 or RB 84 and RB 85: According to the respective timetable, the RB 69 only ran between Hamm and Bielefeld and the RB 85 until December 2014 only between Ottbergen and Göttingen.) |
RE 17 | Due to low demand and for reasons relating to the timetable, the Beringhausen and Messinghausen stops in the direction of Warburg are only served by two early journeys each Monday to Saturday. In the direction of Hagen, service is provided from Monday to Saturday from two early morning departures and two late departures daily. The Hoppecke stop is served every two hours in both directions, sometimes supplemented by additional stops for some early / late trips. All three breakpoints are managed as demand stops. |
RE 18 | This line should not be confused with the Lower Saxony RE 18 (Osnabrück - Bramsche - Quakenbrück - Oldenburg - Wilhelmshaven ), which crosses North Rhine-Westphalia between Osnabrück and Bramsche without stopping. |
RE 19 | RE 19 with train number 20015 (departure 8:44 a.m. from Arnhem Centraal and arrival 10:33 a.m. in Düsseldorf Hbf) and train number 20034 (departure 7:26 p.m. from Düsseldorf Hbf and arrival 9:15 p.m. in Arnhem Centraal) do not stop Oberhausen-Holten and Friedrichsfeld and RE 19 with train number 20047 (departure 6:18 a.m. from Emmerich and arrival 7:33 a.m. in Düsseldorf Hbf) does not stop at Düsseldorf Airport . |
RB 23 | Due to the reactivation of some stops between Bonn and Euskirchen, this line on the section mentioned was considered to be more of a S-Bahn , which was made official in December 2014. Since the number of the line number in the S-Bahn system had not yet been assigned, it was adopted. Since then, the section of this line has been known as the S 23. Between Euskirchen and Bad Münstereifel, the line continues to operate as the RB23. |
RE 42 | Due to route conflicts with long-distance traffic, this line sometimes only stops every hour in Münster-Albachten (both directions of travel) and Sythen (in the direction of Essen). |
RB 42 | Until December 2015, this line was called the RB 55 in North Rhine-Westphalia and could not be confused with the RB 42 that runs between Münster and Essen (from today's perspective, RE 42 Münster - Mönchengladbach ). Unofficially, this name is still used regionally. |
RB 58 | Since this line has only one station in North Rhine-Westphalia, no official number was used until December 2014, only the name "NWB" was used. The introduction of the line numbers in Lower Saxony, however, stipulated that all trains that cross the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony bear the same line number in both federal states. |
RB 65 | Until December 2015 there was the RB 68 with the same sequence of stops, which, however, differed in the operator from the RB 65. |
RB 67 RB 71 | There is a connection between these two lines in Bielefeld, there is no need to change from one line to the other. The reason for the different line numbers lies in the contracts with the private railway companies. This connection did not exist until December 2013, the RB 67 (at that time still NordWestBahn) was connected with the RE 82, the RB 71, however, with the RB 73. |
RB 69 RB 89 | In regular traffic, these two lines run on their common section (Hamm - Münster) as a double traction. At times the route Bielefeld - Gütersloh - Hamm - Soest - Paderborn exists, which changes the line number in Hamm. The Hamm - Münster option, consisting of two vehicles, is also available, with one vehicle each bearing one of the line numbers specified here. |
RE 70 | The RE 60 and RE 78, together with the switch to Löhne, complement the RE 70 every hour. |
RB 81 RB 85 | By October 2004, the line was shortened on every second journey to Bodenfelde - Göttingen. During these trips, the Ottbergen - Bodenfelde section was served by the RB 81, which continued to Northeim . After the end-to-end connection Northeim - Ottbergen was discontinued and the hourly connection from Göttingen via Bodenfelde to Ottbergen was introduced, the RB 81 line number no longer existed, as there are no stations on this line in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the introduction of the line numbers in Lower Saxony, this line got its old number back. |
RB 92 | Due to the lack of platform lighting, the Attendorn-Hohen Hagen stop can only be operated from May 1st to September 30th of each year - this also applies to journeys in daylight. In any case, the stop is only used for tourism and is managed as a stop on demand. |
