The Brilon-Wald station is one of four in-service passenger stations in Westphalia North Rhine- city Brilon . It is located in the town of Brilon-Wald , created by the connection to the railway , about seven kilometers from the city center.

Deviating from the place name, the station “Brilon Wald” is written without a hyphen.

The station building is a listed building.

history

In 1866 the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was granted the concession to build the Schwerte – Warburg railway line ( Upper Ruhr Valley Railway ). Contrary to the efforts of the city of Brilon, the railway company decided against a route close to the city. A route via Olsberg and Elleringhausen with a crest tunnel under the Habberg was chosen, as this was associated with a lower incline and lower construction costs. The 1393 m long Elleringhausen Tunnel was built between 1868 and 1872, and at the same time the Brilon Wald station was built on the east portal in the Hoppecketal .

Goods traffic began on January 6, 1873, and passenger traffic on February 10, 1873 . The station was initially called Brilon-Corbach .

On July 1, 1900, the Almetalbahn went into operation via the core town of Brilon to Paderborn . The Brilon-Corbach station was renamed Brilon Wald in 1901 . In the years from 1913 to 1919 the railway facilities were expanded. A new station building as well as a goods shed and a locomotive shed were built . For this, the Hoppecke was relocated to the east.

On October 31, 1914, the Brilon Wald – Willingen ( Uplandbahn ) line was put into operation and has been used since April 1917 to Korbach .

On February 16, 1945, two low- flying aircraft with on-board weapons fired at a locomotive that was parked in the station. The stoker was killed and the engine driver injured, and the locomotive was then unable to drive. On the same day, a train driver was killed in another low-flying attack in nearby Eschental. In a low-flying attack on March 20, 1945, a train driver and a maid from the Reich Labor Service were killed and several people were wounded. Six locomotives were no longer operational after this attack. A lying in the station Flakzug the Wehrmacht prevented by heavy defensive fire targeted bombing on the railway tracks around the station Brilon Wald.

On the route from Brilon Wald via Brilon Stadt, Thülen , Alme and Büren to Paderborn Hbf , passenger traffic was stopped on September 29, 1974. The freight traffic between Brilon Wald and the Egger company in Brilon was not affected. It is still carried out today.

In 2007, the tracks between Brilon Wald and Brilon Egger were rehabilitated, as the Egger company has an increased need for service and the rehabilitation of the tracks was a condition for expanding the Brilon location.

At the end of 2008, the Ministry of Building and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia promised to include the Brilon Stadt train station in the infrastructure financing plan, on condition that the Ruhr-Lippe Association (ZRL) also provide local rail transport for the railway line from Brilon Wald to Brilon Stadt ordered. The ZRL confirmed this with a resolution of June 23, 2009. After several postponements, for the 2011/2012 timetable change, local rail passenger transport (SPNV) on the Brilon Stadt – Brilon Wald section was resumed on December 11, 2011 , with the first train running on December 10. Since then, trains have been running continuously to and from Dortmund Monday to Friday , and from and to Bestwig and Korbach on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays .

In May 2013 a private investor bought the station building. The aim is to reconstruct the original appearance. The listed building was converted into a hotel and is scheduled to go into operation in 2020.

Track systems

The Brilon Wald station has extensive track systems. Passenger traffic is handled on 5 platform tracks. There are also some tracks without a platform, which are primarily used for freight traffic.

The numbering begins on the west side of the reception building.

  • Track 1 is a through track and is the main platform directly in front of the station building. The track is no longer used in the scheduled local rail transport and only serves as a siding.
  • Track 2 was a through track without a platform and is now completely dismantled. It used to be used for freight transport.
  • Track 3 shares an island platform with track 5 . Today the trains of the Sauerland and Dortmund-Sauerland-Express stop here in the direction of Hagen and Dortmund, respectively.
  • Track 5 is a through track and is located on the platform next to track 3. Today the Sauerland and Dortmund-Sauerland-Express trains stop here in the direction of Brilon Stadt and Warburg / Kassel .
  • Track 6 has no platform and is now used as a through track for goods traffic.
  • Track 7 is on the second island platform and shares it with track 9. Today, individual trains of the Dortmund-Sauerland-Express run from this track to Brilon Stadt as well as to Korbach and Marburg. It is the only platform track that can be used both to and from Hagen and from and to Korbach.
  • Track 9 is the easternmost of the platform tracks. This is where the Kurhessenbahn trains to and from Korbach and Brilon Stadt stop.
  • Next to track 9 there are still some freight tracks without platforms.

All platforms at Brilon Wald station are not barrier-free and can only be reached via the stairs of the pedestrian underpass .

Like the core town of Brilon, Brilon Wald station is part of the Ruhr-Lippe Transport Association (VRL). The authority responsible for local rail passenger transport is the Zweckverband SPNV Ruhr-Lippe (ZRL).
