The Sauerland-Express is a regional express line in the local rail passenger transport from North Rhine-Westphalia , which runs from Hagen to Warburg (Westphalia) and with a few round trips to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe . The line is ordered by the VRR , NWL and NVV . It is operated by DB Regio NRW with class 633 and 644 railcars .

With the award of operation from December 2016, the line is part of the Sauerland network . The line was previously ordered from DB Regio as part of major direct transport contracts.

Timetable offer

The line runs every hour between Hagen Hauptbahnhof and Warburg (Westf) . From Warburg the trains continue to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe almost every two hours on weekdays (exception is RE10709, departure in Hagen Hbf at 9:17 a.m., this ends in Warburg or starts in the opposite direction as RE10720 at 2:38 p.m.) . Class 612 railcars were used on journeys to and from Kassel until March 2019 , and class 628.4 railcars were also used on routes to and from Warburg until December 2016 . There are also trains to Willingen on Fridays and Sundays . Together with the RE 57 there is a half-hourly service between Fröndenberg and Bestwig.

On the section between Warburg and Kassel, since the timetable change on December 15, 2013, the RE 17 only has an intermediate stop in Hofgeismar; in particular, the service from Kassel main train station was canceled at the same time . This shortened the travel time to and from Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe by up to 13 minutes.

Vehicle material used

In the past, this line was operated by class 218 locomotives and n-wagons . In some cases, class 624 railcars were also used.

The Warburg circuits were converted to the 628.4 series in the mid-1990s. At the turn of the millennium, the locomotive hauled trains of the Kassel circulations were converted to the 612 series. Individual trains to Willingen ran with the 218 series until 2006. Since December 2016, the 644 series has been in use alongside the 612 series.

Current operation

The operation of the Sauerland Express was put out to tender as part of the Sauerland network (in lot 1) in December 2016, and the contract went to DB Regio. The vehicle is to be used as part of a replacement concept, according to which diesel multiple units of the type LINK (II or III) from the Polish manufacturer PESA are to be used in the future.

The new trains for the Sauerland network should not be available until autumn 2018 [obsolete] or spring 2019. The delivery delay must be bridged with a replacement concept.

Route description

The line runs from Hagen to Warburg via the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway .

In Warburg she changes to the railway line to Kassel , which is also called Friedrich-Wilhelms-Nordbahn or Hessische Nordbahn .

future

Due to the positive development of the extension of line RE 11 to Kassel, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) plans to reduce the offer for the timetable change in December 2020 to an hourly rate. In return, the RE 17 is to be completely eliminated in the Warburg - Kassel section. There should only be gaps in the timetable between Paderborn and Kassel for two InterCity train pairs. By April 2020, coordination with regard to the scope of offerings in peripheral locations is to be carried out. Funds to finance the additional operating costs must also be raised from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a binding order must be obtained from the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV). In order to improve the transfer situation in Warburg, the establishment of a pocket platform in a westerly direction on central platforms 3 and 4 is being examined. This means that the change can be made barrier-free without using the underpass.
