history

Entrance area of the train station
North side of the station with a "plus point" on platform 2 (Ruhr Valley Railway)

With the opening of the section from Schwerte to Arnsberg of the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BME), today's town of Fröndenberg received its first railway connection in June 1870. A train station was set up near the former village of Fröndenberg, which is today's town center.

About two years later, on August 7, 1872, the BME also opened the branch line from Fröndenberg to Menden, which was later continued to Neuenrade and Iserlohn. This railway line received its own platform tracks (track 11 ff.) South of the continuous main line, which were merged with those of the Ruhr Valley Railway in the west. Thus, the Fröndenberg station was expanded to a wedge station. In the southeast of the station a depot (Bw) was built, which primarily housed the locomotives for the Letmathe – Fröndenberg railway line.

In 1899 the connection to Unna via Ardey and Frömern followed as the third railway line in Fröndenberg station. This line branches off the main line west of the train station, so that continuous connections from Unna to Menden and vice versa are possible.

In the south of the station next to the platforms of the railway line Letmathe-Fröndenberg emerged several freight tracks and a hump , the cargo loading and loading ramps were, however, on the north side of the station. There was a siding to a land trade right next to the depot.

In 1954 the Fröndenberg depot was closed and the vehicles were now used from Schwerte and Letmathe. Three years later, the new reception building , demolished after 1945, followed , which now fills the corner between the routes to Arnsberg and Menden. An extension with social rooms for staff who are still deployed from Fröndenberg is located on the south-east side, platform roofs were built from this building to the main platform on the Menden side (platform 11) and on the central platform there (platform 12/13).

In 1989 the three existing interlockings "Ff" (Fröndenberg dispatcher , on the house platform ), "Fo" and "Fw" (Fröndenberg East and West) of various older designs were replaced by a relay interlocking , which in turn was named "Ff". The train stations in Langschede , Schwerte Ost and Wickede (Ruhr) have also been controlled from here since 2000, 2001 and 2002 .

After the general cargo traffic was abandoned, the freight facilities at Fröndenberg station were superfluous and largely dismantled, as was platform 3. Today there is a bus stop, a P&R facility and the parking lot of a supermarket on the north side . In 2005, Deutsche Bahn sold the station building to the city of Fröndenberg, which left it to the AWO in 2008 . The latter converted the building and set up a bike station including a hotel with six rooms, which unfortunately only led to mediocre success. Vending machines were set up for ticket sales, and Deutsche Post also set up a packing station at Fröndenberg train station in 2009 .

On January 1st, 2015 the company Interconsult UG (limited liability) acquired the station building from the AWO. The station building was extensively renovated and rebuilt in both 2015 and 2018. Since 2019, the areas of the digital campus Fröndenberg with the name gleisvierpunktnull have been located on the 1st and 2nd floors. This project is an amalgamation of modern and innovative companies in the fields of digitization, marketing, e-commerce and creative work. Renowned companies such as the sports equipment manufacturer N & Wcurve from Italy have already established themselves through newly created coworking spaces.

On the ground floor there is also a physical practice and a fitness studio from the company level up.

From the beginning of 2015, the station was modernized as part of Deutsche Bahn's “Modernization Offensive 2”. The previously 38 cm high platforms were brought to the standard height of 76 cm.
