The Fröndenberg – Kamen line is a single-track , partially electrified and partially disused railway line in North Rhine-Westphalia . Today it leads from Fröndenberg / Ruhr via Unna to Unna-Königsborn and formerly on to Kamen .

history

The Fröndenberg – Kamen railway line was built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century as a secondary railway line by the Elberfeld and Essen departments of the Prussian State Railways in order to connect four stations on significant parallel east-west routes in the form of a serpentine line in the second half of the 19th century due to competition from the large private railway companies in Westphalia (from north to south):

First of all, the Royal Elberfeld Railway Directorate opened the connection between Fröndenberg and Unna on January 2, 1899.

The next section from Unna to Königsborn was built together with the Royal Railway Directorate in Essen and opened just over a year later on April 1, 1900, initially only for freight traffic.

For the last section between Königsborn and Kamen, the Essen management was then solely responsible. Only a good six months later, the line was completed and opened for freight traffic on November 1, 1900.

It then took almost a year before passenger traffic between Unna and Kamen began on October 1, 1901.

When the Sauerland network was re-tendered for the timetable change in December 2016, the operating concept on the route at the weekend and during the week was standardized. The RB 54 line is now divided into the two sections Unna - Menden and Fröndenberg - Neuenrade. Previously, the line was served continuously during the week with a longer waiting time in Fröndenberg between Unna and Neuenrade. In addition, the timetable was postponed by 30 minutes in order to improve the connection situation. The delivery of the new Pesa Link multiple units was delayed until autumn 2018, so that Lint 27 and Lint 41 vehicles continued to be used.

Shutdowns

Passenger traffic on the northern section between Unna and Kamen was stopped at the beginning of 1926, after a regional tram from Unna via Kamen to Werne was opened in 1909 with the Unna – Kamen – Werne small train .

On June 3, 1955, the freight traffic between Königsborn and Kamen was also stopped, the line was completely shut down and subsequently dismantled. The former route can still be seen quite well in some parts of the aerial photographs.

Todays situation

The Fröndenberg – Unna section is still a non-electrified secondary railway line with a maximum speed of 60 km / h. In order to increase the speed, level crossings should be technically secured. Some of this has already happened.

It is operated exclusively by the regional train RB 54 " Hönnetal-Bahn ". The trains from Unna only run to Menden. Passengers who want to continue in the direction of Neuenrade have to change trains, as the trains from Neuenrade only run to Fröndenberg. The operator DB Regio uses multiple units of the type Pesa Link .

Since the Westphalian line between Welver and Unna-Königsborn was to be closed at the end of the 1960s, passenger traffic on the section between Unna and Unna-Königsborn was resumed on May 26, 1963 and as a timetable route 232c (from the following year 232b ) to Dortmund Stadthaus bound through.

In 1972 a clocked local transport line was introduced from Unna via Unna-Königsborn, Dortmund Stadthaus and Dortmund-Dorstfeld to Dortmund-Marten Süd, which was extended to Dortmund-Lütgendortmund in 1983. This was the direct forerunner of the S 4 S-Bahn line of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn .

Previously, the line was upgraded for S-Bahn traffic. The section from Unna to Unna-Königsborn was equipped with an overhead line by May 25, 1984, and since June 28, 1984 the connection has been a main railway line with a maximum speed of 80 km / h.

Future development

The operation of the S-Bahn line S4 was tendered jointly by VRR and NWL for 15 years. As a result of the invitation to tender, eurobahn will take over operational management when the timetable changes in December 2019. Even after the tender, vehicles from the 422 series will continue to be used. The VRR will take over 48 of the current vehicles from DB Regio, with the company still responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles. With the reassignment, the timetable will be adapted to the new 15/30 minute cycle scheme of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn . The basic cycle is the half-hour cycle, which is compressed in the rush hour between Dortmund and Unna-Königsborn.

In its local transport plan, the NWL calls for an increase in the average travel speed, for which technical security of the level crossings is necessary in the Fröndenberg – Unna section.
