Swell:

The Welver – Sterkrade railway line is a formerly continuous railway line from Welver in Westphalia to Sterkrade in the western Ruhr area , today only four sections are in operation. Because of its course along the Emscher , it was also called the "Westphalian Emschertal Railway".

The sections from Unna-Königsborn to the former Dortmund Südbahnhof and from Dorstfeld to Mengede are now continuously expanded as a double-track electrified main line and serve as a route for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn (lines S 2 and S 4).

There are also two sections, each just a few kilometers long, in Gelsenkirchen and Bottrop and Oberhausen , which have always been used exclusively for freight traffic.

history

The route was built by the Königlich-Westfälische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WfE) in order to connect its route network, which has so far mainly led to the north and east, to the Ruhr area in the west with its lucrative mines and industrial plants.

Welver - Dortmund

As early as 1847, the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft opened the Dortmund – Hamm section of its main line, followed by the Dortmund – Soest line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft to the south until 1855 .

The WfE built its own line from Welver on its Hamm – Warburg line between the two existing lines and opened the first section to Dortmund on May 15, 1876. The Westphalian railway station was built in the immediate vicinity of the railway station of the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (RhE) built two years earlier , at the time the end point of both the Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Dortmund Süd and the Osterath – Dortmund Süd railway . After the nationalization of the railway companies, the now disused Dortmund Südbahnhof was created .

On May 25, 1965, Queen Elisabeth II stayed overnight in her special train during her first visit to Germany at Lenningsen station.

Dortmund - Mengede

The RhE had already released the last section of its Ruhr area line from Dorstfeld to passenger traffic on November 19, 1874. From the shared Dortmund train station, the WfE built its own freight transport line, which runs parallel to the Rhenish line to Dorstfeld and then on via Huckarde WfE (from 1920 Dortmund-Huckarde Süd station) and Bodelschwingh WfE (last Dortmund-Bodelschwingh, today demolished) initially to Mengede ( today Dortmund-Mengede) and opened it on September 1, 1878.

This connection to Mengede, which was planned from the beginning as a branch line, gave WfE a further connection to the route network of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CME), which had a stop in Mengede as early as 1848 during the construction of its main line between Duisburg and Dortmund had set up.

Bodelschwingh - Sterkrade

Opening of the routes for freight traffic:

  • Line "16" Bodelschwingh - Crange: August 20, 1879
(shared use of the line (2153) of the BME to Bismarck)
  • Route 2246 Bismarck - Hugo: February 12, 1879
  • Route 2246 Hugo - Horst Nord: August 20, 1879
  • Line 2246 Horst Nord - Osterfeld WfE: November 12, 1879
  • Line "18" Osterfeld WfE - Sterkrade WfE: March 15, 1880

Shutdowns

Shortly after the nationalization of the nominally private railway companies, the Prussian State Railways took several sections out of service.

Bodelschwingh - Bismarck

The section between (Dortmund-) Bodelschwingh and Crange was closed on July 1, 1882.

The tracks between Castrop-Pöppinghausen and Herne were initially still used as a connection to the former Friedrich der Große colliery and as a connecting track for shafts 3/4/6 and shafts 1/2 .

This section was completely dismantled before 1892, the branch canal of the Dortmund-Ems Canal was built on its route until 1906 , the northern part of which is now counted as the Rhine-Herne Canal , the southern part was backfilled and used for the construction of the federal motorway 42 utilized.

Horst - Sterkrade

The section between Horst (North) and (Oberhausen-) Sterkrade was closed on October 15, 1884 and completely dismantled by 1892; the former route is still recorded on measuring table sheets from that year.

The section between Horst and Osterfeld was put back into operation on October 1, 1901 and later partly used for the Hamm-Osterfeld railway . After the Second World War, the section up to Bottrop Central Station was shut down again, and between 1968 and 1983 it was partially sold, and it was dismantled in the area of the Bottrop main freight station.

The route between the Oberhausen districts of Osterfeld and Sterkrade along Westfälische Strasse and Richard-Wagner-Allee can still be seen in aerial photographs with a little imagination.

Welver - Königsborn

Renovated station building at Lenningsen station (2005)

The eastern section of the route from Welver to (Unna-) Königsborn was dismantled after it was closed on September 29, 1968 and its western section was converted into a hiking trail.

A kindergarten was set up in the renovated reception building of Lenningsen train station .

Todays situation

The Unna-Königsborn-Dortmund Süd and Dortmund-Dorstfeld-Dortmund-Mengede sections were completely prepared for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn in the 1990s, together with the Dortmund Süd-Dortmund-Dorstfeld section in the Rhineland, and some of them were given a new VzG Number .

Today the S 4 runs on the Unna-Königsborn - Dortmund-Dorstfeld section; the S 2 uses Dortmund-Dorstfeld - Dortmund-Mengede. Both lines had a standard 20-minute clock, this was modified in December 2019 .

The section between Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck or the Hugo junction and Gelsenkirchen-Horst Nord is now a single-track and non-electrified freight mainline. This established the connection to the route network of RBH Logistics GmbH and today only serves to connect the BP refinery in Gelsenkirchen-Horst.

Between Bottrop Hbf and Oberhausen-Osterfeld, the double-track and electrified main line is used as planned by freight trains between the two operating points, while passenger traffic and individual freight trains in this section are assigned to the Hamm-Osterfelder Bahn .

planning

The Arnsberg district government is planning to expand the Dortmund West S-Bahn station, which was previously only served on this railway line, to include a stop on the Hagen – Dortmund S-Bahn line , which would turn it into a “ tower stop ”.

Tariff

Passenger traffic on the route sections still in operation today is included in the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR). For trips within the network area, only the network tariff applies. A transitional tariff, the NRW tariff or the general German railway tariff applies to journeys beyond the boundaries of the network.
