Dortmund – Duisburg railway line
The Dortmund – Duisburg railway line can mean various railway lines that cross the Ruhr area in an east-west direction :
- 1845 ~ 1847: The oldest is the Duisburg – Dortmund railway line , part of the trunk line of the former Cologne-Mindener Railway Company in the northern Ruhr area.
- 1860 ~ 1862: The next to be opened was the central railway line Witten / Dortmund – Oberhausen / Duisburg of the former Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft.
- 1866 ~ 1874: The (largely) southernmost railway line Osterath – Dortmund Süd (including branch line to Duisburg Hbf) of the former Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft followed.
- 1866 ~ 1874: At the same time, the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built the Duisburg-Ruhrort-Dortmund railway parallel to its main line , also known as the "Emschertalbahn" because of the route along the Emscher.
In addition, there are two other railway lines that run through the Ruhr area in an east-west direction:
- 1867 ~ 1880: The shortest is the Bochum – Essen / Oberhausen railway run by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, which is also built through the Emscher valley and is known as the "Emschertalbahn".
- 1878 ~ 1880: The “youngest” is the Welver – Sterkrade railway line of the former Royal Westphalian Railway Company, also called the “Emschertalbahn”, which is why the last three lines are often confused.
