Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg railway line
The Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg railway is a 47-kilometer main line operated by Deutsche Bahn AG in the northern foreland of the Harz Mountains .

The section from Braunschweig to Wolfenbüttel , opened on December 1, 1838, was the first state railway line in Germany , connecting the two most important cities in the then duchy . It was extended on August 22, 1840 first via Börßum into Schladen in Hanover and on October 31, 1841 via Vienenburg to today's Bad Harzburg (then "Neustadt"). The uphill section Vienenburg – Bad Harzburg was operated as a horse-drawn railway until November 8, 1843 . The route to the Harz was the first of several routes desired in Braunschweig that could be enforced against Hanover .
In 1843 the connection Wolfenbüttel – Oschersleben was opened, which together with the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Railway represented a connection to Berlin. After the Braunschweig – Hanover railway was put into operation in 1844 , east-west traffic from Berlin to Hanover ran via Wolfenbüttel, and from 1847 (when the Hanover – Minden railway line opened ) to the Ruhr area. That only changed with the completion of the Berlin – Lehrte railway in 1871. In 1856, the Braunschweigische Südbahn from Börßum to Kreiensen established a connection in the direction of Kassel - Frankfurt .
In 1866 the branch line Vienenburg – Goslar , the first rail connection to the then Hanover city, was connected.
On May 1, 1924, the line was relocated north of Vienenburg from the Wiedelah block station in order to connect it to the Vienenburg marshalling yard. Freight traffic ran on the new route, passenger trains on the old route. After the Oker Bridge on the old line was destroyed by floods in 1926, the passenger trains also took the new route and traveled south of the freight station to the passenger station via the passenger train journey.
For the route from Braunschweig to Bad Harzburg or Goslar, there were specific plans for integration into the route network of the planned RegioStadtBahn Braunschweig . For this purpose, some train stations or stops were to be rebuilt and the number of trains on this section of the route increased in accordance with the more frequent train cycle of the RegioStadtBahn. The planned line should run with diesel hybrid light rail vehicles to Uelzen and in Braunschweig drive on light rail tracks through the city center. The entire project was originally supposed to be completed by 2014. The project failed in 2010 because the cost-effectiveness of the concept was no longer given due to the significantly increased vehicle procurement costs. In order to increase the attractiveness of the lines even without the tram, the ZGB is pursuing the implementation of the “Regional Railway Concept 2014+”. This provides for new vehicles and a wing train concept in Vienenburg station for the Braunschweig – Vienenburg – Bad Harzburg / Goslar regional train line.
The Rüningen and Leiferde (east) stations are to be expanded again to accommodate passenger trains. This was agreed on March 28, 2019 between the state of Lower Saxony, RGB and DB.

Today the line is mainly used for regional traffic , the rather weak freight traffic , which mainly comes from the Halle – Vienenburg railway line , plays only a subordinate role. In the 2011 timetable , the route was operated every two hours by the regional trains Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg and Braunschweig– Goslar , so that north of Vienenburg there was almost an hourly service. Schedule were DMUs of class 628 used in single or double traction. Since the timetable change in December 2014, the Soltau- based railway company erixx has been operating the lines after winning the tender with Lint 54 railcars from the LNVG vehicle pool . As soon as operations began, the two lines were to be combined or separated as part of a wing train concept in Vienenburg. The completion of the necessary infrastructure in Vienenburg station was delayed, however, so that the lines could only run hourly from Braunschweig to Goslar and Bad Harzburg since June 12, 2016. Trains on the Braunschweig – Wolfenbüttel – Schöppenstedt route are added to some of the sections . The entire route is part of the Braunschweig region association tariff .
The railway line is not electrified and has two tracks north of Vienenburg . It belongs to the "Harz-Weser network" and is to be remotely controlled from an electronic signal box in Göttingen in the future. A track switching operation is to be set up between Leiferde and Vienenburg . The regional association for the greater Braunschweig area is also calling for stops to be converted into train stations in order to increase operational flexibility.
