Schladen is a district and the administrative seat of the municipality of Schladen-Werla in the Wolfenbüttel district ( Lower Saxony ).

Schladen is located south-southeast of the Oderwald in the northern Harz foreland between the district town of Wolfenbüttel in the north and Vienenburg in the south, Goslar to the south-west and Bad Harzburg to the south . The Oker flows through it in a south-north direction , into which the Wedde (also called Weddebach) flows here.

Local administration of Schladen-Werla in the town center

Schladen was first mentioned in a document in 1154 as "Schladheim" ( settlement in the swamp ). The old village center was protected by a double moat, the eastern border was formed by the Wedde.

The history of Schladen is closely linked to the Ottonian royal palace Werla , the remains of which can be found about 2 km north of the town. Their supply yard, the forerunner of today's domain, was in Schladen . Just as the Palatinate fell into disrepair around 1200, so did this complex. It was not until Bishop Udo von Hildesheim built it into a castle and hired a Vogt for it. That was Eiko von Dorstadt, who gave himself the name " von Schladen ". The castle remained in the possession of the Counts of Schladen until 1353, when Bishop Heinrich III. Acquired for the Hildesheim monastery , came together with the village after the Hildesheim monastery feud in 1523 into the possession of the Wolfenbüttler dukes and fell back to them in 1643 with the restitution of the large monastery. After the great fire of 1699, the Catholic church was built on the site in 1728. At the end of the 18th century the domain was given a park, gardens and a sheep farm .

In 1803, Schladen fell to Prussia through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, together with the Hildesheim Monastery , but in 1815 to Hanover , with whose annexation it became Prussian again in 1866. In 1885 it came to the district of Goslar , with which it was reclassified from Prussia to Braunschweig in 1941 .

The domain's large sheepfold, built in 1750, now houses the municipal administration, the village community center and the rifle house. In the “Alte Mühle” home, visitors will find excavation finds from the Palatinate, including their “hot air stones”, forerunners of central heating .

In 1784 the most famous Schladener, Leo von Klenze , was born in the “Bocla” (also “bookstore”; today “Boklah” west of the village), the old court in Leragau . He later rose to the position of court architect of the Bavarian King Ludwig I , was ennobled and was one of the most important architects of classicism ( Glyptothek , Propylaea , Alte Pinakothek , Walhalla , design for the New Hermitage in Saint Petersburg ). Extensive information on his work can be found on the upper floor of the “Alte Mühle” home building.

On March 1, 1974, the communities of Beuchte , Isingerode and Wehre were incorporated, while Schladen was assigned to the Wolfenbüttel district in exchange for Bad Harzburg . Together with the city of Hornburg and the municipalities of Gielde and Werlaburgdorf ( Werla ), the combined municipality of Schladen was created, which was dissolved on November 1, 2013 and converted into the single municipality of Schladen-Werla.

religion

The Evangelical Lutheran parish is part of the Schöppenstedt provost.

The Catholic St. Marien Church today belongs to the parish of the Annunciation in Liebenburg .

The New Apostolic congregation was dissolved in 2008; it was the oldest congregation in the New Apostolic Church in Central Germany . The church building on Franz-Kaufmann-Straße came into private ownership and is used profanely today.

coat of arms

Blazon : "A silver lion in red". Due to war damage, it is not possible to determine exactly when Schladen received the coat of arms in its current form, assumptions suggest that it was awarded by the Prussian State Ministry before 1925. It is based on the shield image of the Lords of Schladen , who received Hof Schladen , which emerged from the economic district of the old royal palace Werla , from the Bishop of Hildesheim in 1110 and named themselves as Counts of Schladen. In the coat of arms of the district of Goslar , to which Schladen belonged until 1974, a white lion on a red background is also preserved to commemorate the family of Schladen, which died out in 1362.

Former community partnerships

The municipality of Schladen had partnerships with Derenburg (now a district of Blankenburg / Harz ) in Saxony-Anhalt and Pays de Guitres in France .

Culture and sights

  • On the vineyard is the widely visible Catholic Church of St. Mary, which was built in 1907/08 as a replacement for the previous church St. Joseph from the 19th century, which was destroyed by lightning.
  • The Protestant-Lutheran half-timbered church is located on Kirchstrasse, was built in 1710 and the church tower was added in 1823.
  • Not far from Schladen there are several burial mounds in the Sudholz , the first investigations of which were carried out in the 1930s. In 1947 23 hills were measured, three of which were examined by Alfred Tode in 1959 and 1961 . One hill in particular stood out, where a 2 × 2 m pit was encountered, which was sunk 80 cm deep into the old surface. Various charcoal remains and corpse burns from a pyre were found , as well as the only addition a bronze needle with a cross-ribbed, almost spherical head. In the same hill, on a higher level, under a stone pavement , there was a fire embankment pit, 50 cm in diameter, from which an undecorated ball-head needle could be recovered. Other finds of death include some broken pieces and a stone ax. Site inspections at the beginning of the 1980s identified 24 burial mounds, 20 of which have been preserved in a round shape with a diameter of 12 to 25 m. The four elongated hills are 20 to 30 m long and 13 to 22 m wide. They range in height from 0.20 m to 1.60 m.

The main branches of industry are agriculture , tourism (because of Schladen's proximity to the Harz Mountains) and the sugar processing industry. In Schladen is a sugar factory of Nordzucker AG . The largest employer is the Grotjahn Foundation .

An attraction is the Schladen snake farm, one of the largest snake farms in Europe. The owner is the two-time world champion in the so-called "snake sit-in" Jürgen Hergert.

traffic

Schladen is located immediately to the east of the A 36 and the B 82 and is also connected to the Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg railway line by the Schladen (Harz) train station.
