history

Place name

Gielde was mentioned, among other things, as follows:

  • 953: Gelithi ( th as [ .theta ] as in English th orn )
  • 970-972: Gellithi
  • 1140/1174: Gelithe

  • 1303: Gilede
  • 1339/1458: Gylde
  • 1542: guild
  • from 1616: Gielde

In research, two interpretations are given for the basic word Giel , namely either as “swamp” from the Middle Low German word gȫl (e) with the same meaning or a base * gail / * gēl for “elongated valley, deepening”. The ending -ede belongs to the oldest Germanic name layer and refers, among other things, to the quality of an area.

Early history

Archaeological finds show that Gielde has been inhabited continuously at least since the birth of Christ. The village later probably belonged to the nearby royal palace Werla . To Gielder Feldmark include the deserted villages Hetelde and Wedelingerode .

The Kukeriulenburg , also known as the Sachsenring, is located on the Burgberg as an elongated ridge about 1 km north of Gielde . It is an oval fortification with an area of 0.4 hectares. Oral records testify that the area has been used as a cattle ring in recent times. The designation as Kukeriulenburg or Sachsenring, on the other hand, indicates older traditions and means that there was probably an early medieval refuge at this point , which was related to the royal palace of Werla , 4.2 km to the east .

middle Ages

Gielde and its church were first mentioned in a document in 1140. The patronage of the church initially lay with the Heiningen Monastery , which later fell to the Archdeacon of Goslar as a fief of the Hildesheim Monastery . After the Hildesheim collegiate feud , Gielde fell to the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in 1523 .

Modern times

On April 4, 1835, a major fire broke out in the village, which burned down 17 courtyards including ancillary buildings and 9 Brinkitzer houses . Gielde was connected to the Warnetalbahn in 1856, and passenger traffic ceased on January 1, 1976.

On November 1, 2013, Gielde was incorporated into the Schladen-Werla community .
