Braunschweigische Südbahn to Kreiensen

The railway line between Börßum and Salzgitter-Bad is known as the Warnetalbahn . It is part of the Braunschweigische Südbahn . The railway line takes its name from the small river Warne , which flows from Salzgitter-Bad via Gielde into the Oker in Dorstadt .

The maximum permissible speed is 40  km / h , but the real speed is often lower due to faults in the superstructure and unrestricted level crossings .

history

The line was opened in 1856 from Börßum to Kreiensen to create a connection from Braunschweig to the Ruhr area and southern Germany. In 1868, the line was expanded to two tracks. At the same time, the Börßum – Jerxheim line was completed. From Jerxheim it went on to Oschersleben and Magdeburg. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 the strategic importance of this connection became apparent, but its importance for east-west traffic decreased with the opening of the routes Braunschweig – Berlin via Helmstedt and Magdeburg (1872), and Hanover – Berlin via Stendal (1871) from again.

After the end of the Second World War, east-west traffic practically ceased due to the demarcation of the boundary, so that in 1968 the second track of the Warnetalbahn was removed and the control and safety technology was simplified. On January 1, 1976, passenger traffic was finally discontinued. However, the route was not shut down, but used as a storage location for freight cars. Freight traffic was finally stopped in the 1980s, most recently between Salzgitter-Bad and Klein Mahner on May 28, 1988.

Since 1988, regularly rides with a steam locomotive of the series 41 or Köf II as a museum railway instead.

Development from 2018

The Wolfenbüttel district had the plan to renovate the Oker Bridge for around 500,000 euros in 2018. However, this plan was not implemented for cost reasons.

The renovation of track 2 at Klein Mahner train station was completed in February 2019. In addition, two points were refurbished.

In February 2019, after a break of more than 30 years, a scheduled freight train ran again in the Warnetal. 1200 t of logs were transported from the Vorharz region to Wismar. By the end of 2019, around 25 timber transports had operated from Klein Mahner to Wismar and to Austria.
