history

In the south of present-day urban area of Salzgitter 1856 by crossed Börßum towards Kreiensen guided Brunswick Southern Railway as part of an east-west highway stations Salzgitter (today Salzgitter-Bad) - and Ringelsheim (Harz) (now Salzgitter Ringelsheim) .

In 1896, the construction of a siding in standard gauge to the Fürst Bismarck potash mine in today's Greifpark began; however, the shaft was abandoned again in 1903. In 1924, most of the aforementioned siding became part of the narrow-gauge ore line Calbecht – Döhren to connect the Georg-Friedrich mine and later the Anna and Hope mine . For this route, the Warnetalbrücke was built east of the train station , which crossed the later trunk road 248 , the Warne and the Braunschweigische Südbahn. Already 16 years later, the line between Calbecht and Vosspaß (and with it the bridge) was given up again, as freight traffic to Calbecht was relocated to the ore line Broistedt – Calbecht – Salzgitter-Bad operated by the Salzgitter Railway ; The reloading station, previously located north of Calbecht, from the narrow-gauge wagons with 780 mm gauge to the standard-gauge wagons was therefore relocated to Vosspaß. This Salzgitter-Vosspaß loading station , which was closed in 1968, fell into disrepair after its closure and was demolished in 2013/14.

However , there is no evidence of a connection to the Salzgitter-Bad concentration camp founded by Hermann-Göring-Werke in 1944 , which touched the narrow-gauge ore railway line to Döhren.

After the division of Germany , the traffic flows changed. Many railway lines that crossed the inner-German border were interrupted, including the connections from Magdeburg to Jerxheim and Börßum via Eilsleben and Oschersleben, which took away the east-west function of the Braunschweigische Südbahn; the Salzgitter-Bad train station suddenly lost its national transport links.

At the same time, however, a better transport connection for the Salzgitter area was sought. In 1956 a direct connection from Salzgitter-Bad to Braunschweig was opened by closing a gap to Salzgitter-Drütte (see Braunschweig – Derneburg railway line ), so that travelers no longer had to take the detour via Börßum and Wolfenbüttel. As a result, the second track of the Braunschweigische Südbahn was removed in 1968. At the end of 1975 the last passenger train finally ran to Börßum. By mid-1988, freight traffic in this direction was also gradually discontinued. However, the line was not closed ; Instead, regularly rides with a steam locomotive of the series 41 or Köf II as a museum railway instead (see Warne Valley Railway ), but rarely pass through to Salzgitter Bad.

Station building

The station building was completed one year after the line went into operation. The ground floor of the two-storey building was used for the travel company, while the station master's apartment was on the upper floor. Between 1858 and 1884 there was also a post office in the station. The building was expanded in 1900 to cope with the increasing tourist traffic caused by the spa guest operations. A small garden was also created for the guests in the area of today's station forecourt. Between 1955 and 1957 another building was erected on the east side of the building, which contained a large reception hall, a restaurant and a kiosk as well as a small hotel on the upper floor. In front of this building, a new forecourt with bus stops, taxi stands and car parking spaces was created. The building, completed in 1957, was torn down again in the summer of 1997 and a residential building was built over it together with the eastern forecourt. The historic station building was acquired by a private investor in 1997 and restored over the next three years. In 2000, the city of Salzgitter had the southern station forecourt redesigned and the underpass under the railway tracks expanded, which also serves as a connection between the old town and the shopping center north of the tracks.
