The last synagogue in Česká Lípa (German Bohemian Leipa) dates from 1863. During the November pogroms in 1938 , the synagogue was burned down by the National Socialists and never rebuilt.

history

The first unconfirmed reports about a prayer hall date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. Apparently it was a wooden building. The Old Jewish Cemetery has also existed in the city since the end of the 15th century . The Jews in the city received a building permit for a synagogue around 1700, but the project was not implemented until 40 years later. The synagogue was badly affected during the pogroms of 1745. In 1863/64 the old building was torn down and a new synagogue was built. The synagogue was set on fire during the November pogroms in 1938 and the street on which it was located was renamed "Stürmergasse". The fire was first extinguished by the city fire brigade, but one day later the synagogue was destroyed during the second arson. The remains of the walls were removed in the spring of 1941.

architecture

The synagogue from 1863/64 was built in the neo-Romanesque style with strong Moorish elements. The foundation stone was laid on April 17, 1863. Responsible was the architect Eduard Posselt , who was based on the designs by Josef Goldbach . It was consecrated on September 23, 1864 by Rabbi Josef Lehmann, who served here for the following three years.
